When a rescue team from the Southern Naval Command arrived at a flooded house at Chengamanad near Aluva, they had little clue about the emergency that awaited them.
Among those waiting to be airlifted was 25-year-old Sajitha Jabil, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy.
What followed was a risky operation to save not just one, but two lives. And, though they had difficult operation on hand, the Navy team succeeded in their mission.
Ms. Jabil had ruptured her amniotic sac by the time the rescue team found her. A doctor from the naval hospital INHS Sanjivani was then airlifted to the spot and on his instructions, she was put on the rescue helicopter and taken to the naval hospital around 1.30 p.m. There was soon reason to rejoice as in around half an hour, Ms Jabil delivered a baby boy. Both the mother and the child are fine, said a Naval spokesperson.
