Kerala local government polls in November

Local government elections in Kerala would be held in November.

State Election Commissioner K. Sasidharan Nair on Monday said the elections would be held in a single stage, but over two days. As many as 2.49 crore voters would cast their votes in the elections.

Mr. Nair, who was briefing the media after an all-party meeting, said the Commission would try to conduct the elections early November after completing all the due processes. Besides the existing rural and urban local government institutions, the 28 new municipalities, the Kannur municipal corporation and the newly formed 30 block panchayats would go in for the polls.

The Commissioner's announcement brings the curtain down on uncertainty about the dates of the elections, which are considered to be crucial for both the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which hopes to put in a good show in the polls.
