Kannur cantonment polls today

The electorate in the Kannur Cantonment, the smallest of the Cantonments in the country, is going to the polls on January 11 to elect members in six wards in the area.

The member Cantonment Board has six elected members. The other representatives in the board are Army Station Commander here, who is the president of the board, a medical officer of the Military Hospital here, Garrison Engineer, Cantonment Executive Officer, and Additional District Magistrate representing the district administration.

Electioneering

The cantonment area here witnessed hectic electioneering by candidates representing Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The vice president of the board will be elected from among the six elected members.

Each candidate met each voter in their respective wards during the election campaign.

An enclave

The total number of voters in the 1.79 sq.km. cantonment area is 1,695, including members of civilian households and families of army personnel living in the area.

The cantonment is an enclave within the Kannur municipal area. The last election to the Cantonment Board was held in May 2008. The LDF won four of the six wards then.

Elections to the other cantonment boards in the country are also being held on the same day.

Results

The polling will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The results will be announced by late in the evening after the counting is over.
