Jail inmate gets MBA degree

Babu Mathew of Paisakkari had been studying for MCA when he was involved in a murder case.

An inmate of the Central Prison here has successfully completed the MBA course offered by Pondicherry University.

The jail authorities said Babu Mathew, son of Vazhakkat Mathai and Mary at Paisakkari, near Payyavur, was likely to be the first jail inmate in the State to have secured the MBA degree.

Convicted in a murder case, he spent his jail life for preparing for the business administration course, they said adding that he specialised in Human Resource Management. He secured 58 per cent marks, they said.

Mathai had been studying for MCA course after completing B.Com. at Erode Arts College when he was involved in the murder case. After his conviction, he had taken to the MBA course. He had also done a certificate course in motor vehicle mechanics.

The jail officials said that he had been assisted in his MBA studies by jail Superintendent Shivadas K. Thyparambil, jail welfare officers K.V. Mukesh and T. Rajesh Kumar and Sreekala, Section Officer at the Mahe Sub-Centre of the Pondicherry University Directorate of Distance Education.
