February 20, 2012 08:24 pm | Updated March 27, 2012 05:00 pm IST - KANNUR:

The murder of an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker on Monday afternoon sparked tension in some parts of the district. Earlier in the day, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders, including party district secretary P. Jayarajan and T.V. Rajesh, MLA, were assaulted at Ariyil near Taliparamba.

The police said that IUML worker A. Shukkoor, 22, from Ariyil, was found dead with stab injuries at Vallavamkadavu under the Kannapuram police station limits here. He was allegedly stabbed to death by CPI(M) workers possibly in retaliation to the manhandling of the CPI(M) leaders at Ariyil by suspected IUML workers.

The police said that another IUML worker, identified as Sakariya, 23, also suffered stab injuries at Vallavamkadavu around 3.45 p.m. He was admitted to the Mission Hospital at Kannapuram.

Police sources said that situation was fragile in parts of Taliparamba and nearby areas following reports of the death of the IUML worker at Kannapuram.
