IUML misleading public on yoga, says BJP

June 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - KASARAGOD:

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is trying to torpedo the Centre’s directive to include yoga in the school syllabi, terming the move as communal overtures, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) State general secretary K. Surendran has said.

The Centre’s decision to include yoga in the academic curricula was taken to mark the International Yoga Day as announced by the United Nations, Mr. Surendran told a press conference here on Tuesday.

The recent observations made by senior IUML leader E. T Muhammed Basheer on yoga did not augur well as several Muslims and other political parties had come forward to practice yoga on their own to fight lifestyle diseases, he pointed out urging the IUML to withdraw its opposition to the age-old practice.

Mr. Surendran wondered how practicing yoga was an act of appeasing a particular community when the movement had got wide acceptance in several places, including West Asia and the U.S.
