The intensity of downpour in Alappuzha may be less, but the situation in the district is still flood-like, with intermittent rain lashing several parts.
Low-lying areas in the district remain submerged under the water. In Kuttanad, one of the worst hit areas, several families have left their homes following severe flooding. Sea erosion has battered coastal areas including Cherthala, Ambalappuzha and Karthikappally.
Relief camps
The district administration has so far opened 86 relief camps. Officials said 21,458 people of 4,977 families had been shifted to relief camps. “We have also opened 123 gruel centres in Kuttanad taluk for 50,873 people. One gruel centre is also functioning in Chengannur taluk,” an official said. Authorities said many houses had been damaged in heavy rain since Sunday. Besides, agriculture in several hectares was destroyed. In Kuttanad, wide spread bund breaches submerged large tracts of paddy fields. Traffic on the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) Road was disrupted for the second consecutive day on Tuesday due to flooding. Floodwaters submerged parts of the Ambalappuzha-Thiruvalla Road.
District Collector S. Suhas declared a holiday for educational institutions including professional colleges in Kuttanad and Chengannur taluks on Wednesday. Schools functioning as relief camps in Cherthala, Ambalappuzha, Mavelikara and Karthikappally taluks will remain closed. In another incident, Ramakrishnan, 62, of Thenguvilayil house, Kurathikad, died after he fell into a waterbody near his house on Tuesday evening.
