Involve more in services sector, cooperatives told

July 27, 2012 01:35 am | Updated 01:35 am IST - Kozhikode:

Minister for Cooperation C.N. Balakrishnan has advised cooperative institutions to play a more active role in the services sector.

Inaugurating a dialysis unit at the District Cooperative Hospital here on Thursday, the Minister urged cooperative institutions to actively involve in the distribution and sale of lifesaving drugs as well as essential commodities since these were of vital importance for human survival. He said women, weaker sections and the destitute should be given special care by cooperative institutions.

The Minister reminded leaders of cooperative movements that profit had never been the driving force for cooperatives. He intended to hold discussions to bring about drastic changes in the sector.

Mayor A.K. Premajam presided over the function. M.K. Raghavan, MP, inaugurated the hospital’s renovated gastroenterology department.

Hospital president Koliyott Bharathan, secretary A.V. Santhosh Kumar and vice-president P.K. Ahammed spoke.
