The inland fishing sector, which accounts for 64 per cent of the total production in the State, has registered unprecedented levels of development during the past five years, according to Fisheries Minister K. Babu.
He was inaugurating the first phase of the aqua tourism project at the fish farm at Palakkari, near Vaikom, on Tuesday.
According to the Minister, an attempt is being made to turn aqua tourism projects as part of the Fisheries Department. A master plan for aqua tourism at Palakkari will be formulated by the department soon, he said.
The Rs.922-lakh Palakkari project is progressing satisfactorily, he said and added that in addition to the 21 coastal roads, an aquarium and modern fish market have been completed.
Mr Babu said that developmental works like the one taken up at Palakkari will be undertaken in Njarackal and Malippuram in Ernakulam district. The department will work towards bringing the eastern inlands of the State to the fisheries map and new projects are being undertaken in the midlands and highlands, he said.
