Indo-Sharjah cultural centre to come up at Olavanna

The government has decided to acquire 30.4 acres of land in Olavanna village, Kozhikode, for the construction of an Indo-Sharjah Cultural Centre and a memorial to Vaikom Mohammed Basheer.

The Cabinet has sanctioned ₹56.24 crore from the KIIFB fund for the purpose.

Culture Minister A.K.Balan said the Indo-Sharjah Cultural and Education Centre had been announced by the Sharjah ruler and member, Federal Supreme Council of the UAE, Sultan bin Muhammad Al- Qasimi during his visit to the State in 2017.

While the government of Kerala would have to provide the land for the project, the Emirate of Sharjah would foot the construction cost.

A press note quoting the Minister said the State budget had earmarked funds for the construction of cultural complexes as memorials to leaders of the renaissance movement in Kerala. The memorial to Vaikom Mohammed Basheer would be built under this scheme, he said.
