IMD issues red alert for Idukki

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Idukki district for Wednesday signalling the possibility of extreme heavy rainfall. 

In its 1 p.m. update, IMD's Met Centre in Thiruvananthapuram also warned that Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad are likely to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.Orange alerts have been issued for these districts for Wednesday. 

Yellow alerts have been issued for the remaining districts.

For Thursday, orange alerts have been issued for the northern districts of Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad and Kozhikode.

Kerala was devastated by the worst floods in August 2018 that claimed over 400 lives and razed several houses.

Kottayam and Ernakulam districts reported the heaviest rain last night with nearly 20 and 15 cm of rain respectively.

Major roads in Ernakulam and its suburban areas have been inundated as the district received 154 mm of rain.

A year after that, the northern parts of Kerala were flooded again in August as heavy rains and widespread landslides had wreaked havoc, leaving over 120 dead.
