: Idukki will be the first district in the country linked to the National Optic Fibre Network (NOFN), which will ensure broadband connection to rural areas of the district. It is being implemented as part of the Digital India project of the Union government. Kerala’s widespread optical fibre network in the country and the high digital literacy rate helped in tipping the scales towards the State. An amount of Rs 30,000 crore has been set aside for the project in the country with Rs 1,000 crore for Kerala alone.
It will considerably reduce the urban rural divide with regard to communication accessibility.
The project is aimed at implementing the network throughout the State a complete NOFN by March. District Collector Ajit Patil said that there would be seminars on implementation of the scheme.
He said that the district was already ahead in adapting to technological advancement in the IT sector. Union Minister for Communication Ravisankar Prasad will inaugurate the declaration event through video conference at a function in Technopark, Thiruvanathapuram, on Monday.
