Honeybee flora park to promote beekeeping

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar inaugurated a ₹75-lakh honeybee flora park at the Beekeeping Consortium and Training Centre at Kochalummoodu, near Mavelikara, on Thursday. An initiative of the Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation (Horticorp), the park is the first of its kind in the country.

He said the Agriculture Department would launch projects for producing good quality honey in the State. “The government has approved beekeeping as a farming activity. We will do everything possible to promote it. The farmers will be provided training in beekeeping at this centre. The Horticorp has been appointed as the nodal agency for bee production and sale of honey,” he said.

The Minister also inaugurated the renovated building of the beekeeping centre. Actor Honey Rose conducted the first sale of value-added products.

The park was set up on three acres of land. The aim of the park is to produce high quality honey. As part of the initiative, a large number of plants and trees producing nectar are being grown at the park for the bees to feed. So far, around 3,000 farmers from across the State have completed training at the centre.

R. Rajesh MLA presided. Horticorp chairman Vinayan, Horticorp managing director Babu Thomas, Mavelikara block panchayat president K. Raghu Prasad, Bharanikavu block panchayat president Rajani Jayadev, and others were present at the function.


The police arrested eight BJP workers for waving black flags at the Minister at the function. The protest was led by BJP Mavelikara Assembly Constituency president Vettiyar Manikuttan demanding that the State government to preserve the traditions and customs at Sabarimala temple. The arrested were later released on bail, the police said.
