HIV-positive breast milk for infant

Inquiry into hospital incident begins

June 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Investigations are under way into a case of administering breast milk of an HIV-positive woman to an infant at Alappuzha government medical college. The Health Minister has sought a report and it would be handed over on completion, the medical superintendent said. The ignorance of a bystander of a patient had apparently led to the incident. A newborn baby was given breast milk of the HIV positive woman by the bystander as the infant’s mother was found to have inadequate quantity of breast milk. Medication is in progress to ameliorate the effect of the infected milk in the infant’s immunity system. The medication would have to be continued for some more time, the authorities said.
