Heavy downpour lashes Malappuram

Turbulent sea eats into Ponnani coast; orange alert issued for three days

Heavy rain lashed the district, particularly its western and central areas, with low-lying areas in the coastal regions of Ponnani and Tirur getting flooded.

Areas like Ponnani, Kadavanadu, Charavattom, Eswaramangalam, Ezhavathuruthu, and Naithallur were partly submerged on Friday as heavy downpour continued in the coastal region through the afternoon.

Around a dozen houses along the coast of Ponnani, Palapetty, Puthuponnani, Veliyamkode, and Kapirikkad were damaged as the sea turned turbulent on Friday. People were evacuated from several houses as sea water entered into dozens of them in these regions.

A few houses in Veliyankode grama panchayat were damaged as uprooted trees fell on them in the heavy wind in the district on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, officials said they were maintaining vigil and had taken all precautionary measures to handle emergencies.

The coastal regions of Tirur and Tanur too witnessed heavy wind and rain on Friday. A massive hole formed in an overbridge in Tirur town, choking traffic and keeping motorists on tenterhooks.

The central regions of Malappuram, Vengara, Kottakkal, Valanchery, and Kondotty too received heavy and continuous showers. However, no loss or damage was reported.

The rain spared the eastern region of Nilambur until Friday evening. Revenue officials said no damage or loss had been reported from Nilambur taluk.

According to figures provided by the State Information and Public Relations Department, Vengara received 128.5 mm rainfall in 24 hours till 4 p.m. on Friday. When Valanchery got 34.02 mm rain, Wandoor received 22.6 mm, Kalikavu 18.79 mm, and Chungathara 17.76 mm rain.

Mannarkkad in Palakkad district adjoining Malappuram received only 6.08 mm rain.

The authorities have issued orange alert for Malappuram district for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and yellow alert for Tuesday.

Officials said there would be heavy rain in parts of the district for the next three days. District Collector Jaffer Malik has asked all tahsildars and village officers to remain vigilant.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into sea until Tuesday. Strong winds up to the speed of 50 kmph have been forecast in the seas off the Kerala coast.
