The district administration is launching community-oriented adventure sports activities this month as a campaign against lifestyle diseases in association with the District Sports Council and the district panchayat.

At a press meet on Wednesday, District Collector Mir Mohammed Ali said the ‘Month of Adventure’ programme being launched on May 6 would be held on four Sundays of the month. The events included included bicycling, kayaking, marathon, and swimming that would be open to the public.

The objective of the adventure sports events was to provide an opportunity for the people of the district to imbibe a culture of sports for improving health, he said.

Bicycle rally

The ‘Month of Adventure’ programme would begin with a bicycle rally from here to Muzhappilangad beach on May 6. Anyone with a bicycle could join the rally which would also include a 3-km bike race on the beach.

On May 13, a 10.5-km quarter marathon would be held at Thalassery connecting historical sites in and around Thalassery, including the Thalassery fort, Thiruvangad temple, Gundert statue, and St. Patrick’s Church, among others.

The third adventure programme was a swimming event across the Valapattanam river at Parassinikkadavu on May 20. The 570-metre ‘Parassini Cross’ swimming programme would also be used as an occasion of swimming coaching, the Collector said. The last programme to be held on May 27 was kayaking on the Kavvayi backwaters near Payyannur, he said.

‘Gift a bicyle’

Mr. Ali said a ‘gift a bicycle’ campaign was also planned to promote use of bicycles. On the day of the event, any person could gift a bicycle to children.

Those who want to participate in the events should register at the DTPC office or online at wearekannur.com. The Collector said that a beach gym would be started on the Payyambalam beach.
