Shut your eyes. Concentrate. Now name all the 140 Assembly constituencies in Kerala. Tough? Not if you are Rijesh Ponnani.

For the electronics technician, it takes just four minutes to reel out the names of all 543 Lok Sabha seats. Almost without a pause. And you read it right the first time. Four minutes.

His performance was informally timed on Wednesday when he displayed his amazing memory power before Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan and the media. He started off with the LS segments in Andhra Pradesh, and proceeded in alphabetical order all the way to West Bengal and wound down with the Union Territories, leaving his audience spell-bound.

“I can list the 140 Assembly segments and the names of the MLAs as well,” says Rijesh, who began ‘training’ on the LS seats in February this year.

“I try to train every day. Sometimes I fall asleep when reciting the names,” he adds with a laugh. Rijesh, who, as his name suggests, hails from Ponnani, says he closely follows politics. “My father Sankarankutty died more than 20 years ago. I remember him discussing politics at home,” he said.

Rijesh had become aware of his extraordinary skill years ago when he found that he could remember mobile phone numbers easily. During the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, he lapped up the grand democratic exercise using three televisions placed side by side. He publicly displayed his skills for the first time during the 2016 Assembly elections.

Mohanlal films

Rijesh describes himself as film-crazy, and has exhibited his skill in front of actor Mohanlal, reeling out the names of the actor’s films along with their releasing years. Asked about his future plans, he says he wants to do a similar act in front of his other favourite actor, Mammooty. And his other great ambition - to act in films.
