The hartal called by Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Bharatheeya Janata Party (BJP) to protest against hike in petrol prices was total and peaceful in the District on Monday.

The motor vehicles except two wheelers were off the road. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were also off the road.

It also did not operate inter-state buses including the Palakkad-Coimbatore chain services putting commuters between the two States into great hardship.

The markets, business establishments, educational institutions, banks etc., remained closed across the District.

Though the government offices were opened there was only thin attendance.

There were no major incidents of violence reported from the District, the police said.

LDF took out a march from Government Victoria College premises to Stadium bus stand and held a meeting addressed by its top leaders.

BJP took out a march to Head Post office in the town and held a meeting demanding the Central government to withdraw the hiked petrol price.
