Normal life in the district was affected by the Statewide flash hartal called by the Youth Congress on Monday to condemn the murder of two activists of the organisation at Periya in Kasaragod district on Sunday night.

Attendance was low in government offices and financial institutions.

Educational institutions, business establishments, and shops, except medical shops, remained closed during the day.

Unincidental

No untoward incident was reported from any parts of the district, Additional District Magistrate K. Ajeesh told The Hindu .

While private buses and four-wheelers, including taxis, stayed off the road, the Kerala State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operated nearly 40 long-route services, including one service to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and four services to Gundlupet in Karnataka, from its Sulthan Bathery depot in the morning with the help of the police officers, the KSRTC sources said here on Monday.

Vehicles diverted

When the hartal supporters tried to obstruct KSRTC buses here in the morning, the police diverted the vehicles via the bypass road, Mr. Ajeesh said.

Queue

A long queue of vehicles were seen at the Tholpetty, Madhur and Muthanga checkposts on the border of Kerala and Karnataka States.

Hartal supporters took out protest marches in various parts of the district.
