Authorities are planning to make the inauguration of the Kannur International Airport on December 9 a mega event.

Preparations are under way to arrange a venue with seating capacity for 25,000 people for the event.

Kannur International Airport Ltd officials said here that the venue would have an area of one lakh sq ft.

The inaugural ceremony will be attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu, State Ministers, and other dignitaries.

A review meeting of the organising committee chaired by Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan was held here on Tuesday. Officials said after the meeting that private vehicles would not be allowed into the airport on December 9.

Various cultural programmes, including percussion performance led by Mattannur Sankarankutty, would be held.

Anticipating a huge turnout of people from different parts of the district, arrangements, including information counters, would be set up in coordination with the police for helping the public.

Sixty special buses would conduct free circular service from 8 a.m. from two localities near the airport, KIAL officials said. The police would manage traffic on the day, they added.
