Good response to fundraising drives

Kanivode Kollam collects ₹22 cr

Over ₹22 crore has been collected under Kanivode Kollam, the fundraising drive launched by the district administration for rebuilding the State, in four days. Besides the money, more than one acre of land has also been contributed for the cause by various persons from Pathanapuram, Kundara, and Kottarakara.

Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma, who visited all taluk headquarters to directly accept the contributions, thanked the public for their kind response. “Kanivode Kollam fundraising will be a continuing process. Corporations, panchayats, cooperative banks, and other institutions have come up with generous contributions. People from private sector should come forward more and we hope many others will join the drive in the coming days,” she said.

From Sept 12

In the fundraising drive that started on September 12, the highest contribution came from Anchal (₹62.3 lakh). Panchayats that contributed more than ₹50 lakh include Thazhava (₹61.5 lakh), Thrikkovilvattom (₹60 lakh), Mayyanad (₹51.5 lakh), and Kulasekharapuram (₹51.7 lakh). Public contribution and the amount from panchayat funds alone came over ₹11 crore.

District panchayat contributed ₹53.5 lakh, which also includes the prize money of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar (DDUPSP) and Arogyakeralam Awards. District panchayat members and staff contributed their one month’s honorariums and salaries to the fund.

Various events

Kollam Corporation contributed over ₹1 crore and Mayor V. Rajendrababu handed over the amount to the Minister. He said that the Corporation would go ahead with the fundraising drive and organise various events for the purpose.

Autorickshaw drivers in the district collected ₹1 lakh for the fund. Rahman, a headload worker contributed ₹1,000 and Ittichani Mathai donated his old-age pension.

Individuals, private institutions and organisations who missed the taluk-level drive could hand over their donations at the Collectorate, said District Collector S. Karthikeyan. He will receive contributions on all working days from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
