Heavy rain triggered by the Gaja cyclonic storm lashed the district on Friday resulting in landslips and disruption of traffic at various places in the high range, especially on the border villages of Tamil Nadu.
The Periyavarai bridge, which was temporarily re-built after it was destroyed in the recent floods, was washed away, thereby isolating Marayur from Munnar. It is also a link to Rajamala in the Eravikulam National Park, the main tourist attraction in Munnar.
The Muthirapuzha river was flooded and water entered the Old Munnar town. Though traffic was not disrupted on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway, there were landslips.
Two families in Vattavada were removed to safer areas following a major landslip there. Heavy rain and landslips were reported in Konnathady, Rajakkad and Vellathooval, the villages heavily damaged in the floods. Traffic on Vannapuram-Thadiyampadu road was disrupted in landslips and floods. Landslips were also reported at Thattekanny near Neryamangalam and Panniyarkutty.
‘No’ to night travel
The rains which started in a mild level on Thursday night intensified from Friday morning. The district administration has asked the public to avoid night travel on the high range roads. People should take care as water level in rivers may suddenly rise in the event of continuing rainfall and landslips. Power supply and communication networks were also affected in the district.
