In an intolerant world where a film-maker thinks twice even before writing a dialogue fearing its social and political ramifications, Sanalkumar Sasidharan prefers to stand close to his conviction.
Giving a title like Sexy Durga for his next movie may have raised many eyebrows, but the award-winning director of Oralppokkam and Ozhivudivasathe Kali sounds nonchalant. “I have no other name to give my movie considering its content. It’s a satire on the contemporary social milieu of Kerala. It makes an effort to map how our society views sex, privacy and women. It will be narrated through 10 scenes, or rather 10 events,” said the young director.
On the possibility of the name inviting criticism, he said ‘the biggest surrender a film-maker could make is to change a title fearing backlash and criticism.’
“I have no vicious intentions or plans to gain mileage out of this title. As a film-maker, I enjoy the freedom to give an apt title for the movie. Many women have the name Durga and I should not have fear about giving this title,” he said.
Rajasri Deshpande of Angry Indian Goddesses- fame plays the title role in the movie. Made under the banner of Niv Art Movies, Sexy Durga will be shot in Perumbavur and Thiruvananthapuram in a single schedule.
Pradeep Kumar, Nisthar Sait, and Arun Nair, who played key roles in Ozhivudivasathe Kali, are part of the main cast.
Prathap Joseph, director of Kuttipuram Palam , is cranking the camera. He was the cinematographer of the movie Crime No. 89 .
The shooting will begin in March.
