Fr. Gabriel Chiramel dead

Fr. Gabriel Chiramel, founder and former Principal of Christ College, Irinjalakuda, and founder director of Amala Cancer Hospital, died at Amala Bhavan, here on Thursday. He was 103.

A well-known zoologist, Fr. Chiramel discovered shipworm Bankia gabrieli while he was head of the department at Sacred Heart’s College. The country honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2007.

He founded Christ College and developed it into an institution of national excellence.

He started a women’s section in Christ College in 1963, which eventually became St. Joseph College, Irinjalakuda. He started Pratheeksha Bhavan and Sneha Bhavan for special children. The funeral will be held on Saturday.
