The Kazhakuttam police on Friday arrested four people for the alleged attempt to murder a youth by hurling country bombs at Menamkulam a day ago.

The police identified the accused as Akhil, 21, of Attipra, Rahul Pinto, 23, of Valiyaveli, Joshy, 23, of Vettucaud, and Leon Johnson, 29, of Menamkulam. They have been caught in connection with the attack on Menamkulam native Rajan Pereira on Wednesday. He had lost a leg after one of the bomb landed close to him.

City police Commissioner G. Sparjan Kumar said Leon had been apprehended from Nagercoil, while the others were caught from Kulathoor within few hours of the incident.

Leon has been involved in 17 criminal cases and figures in the rowdy list maintained by the Kazhakuttom police. He had also been expelled from the district under provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.

Akhil, the prime accused, is also known to have been involved in nearly 10 cases registered in Thumba, Pettah, Ayiroor, Parippally and Kallambalam police stations, and figures in the rowdy list maintained by the Thumba police.

Mr. Kumar said a probe was underway to unearth the source of the bombs and to ascertain the possibility of more people being involved in the case.
