The former bishop of Catholic Church (Latin rite), Alappuzha diocese, Peter Michael Chenaparambil passed away at a private hospital in Ernakulam on Thursday morning. The funeral will be held at the Mount Carmel cathedral here at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The 83-year-old bishop died of cardiac arrest around 7.10 a.m.

Mar Chenaparambil, who took charge as the second bishop of the Alappuzha diocese on September 4, 1983, remained in the post till December 9, 2001. Active in social activities throughout his official life, Mar Chenaparambil took special interest in rainwater harvesting. He also strived to popularise solar-powered hearths for cooking. He also served as secretary-general of Kerala Catholic Bishops Conuncil Born as the son of Michael and Josephine of Chenaparambil in Manakodam in Thuravur here on December 8, 1929, he was ordained on June 1, 1956. Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Finance Minister K.M. Mani, and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala have condoled the death of Mar Chenaparambil. Mr. Karthikeyan said Mar Chenaparambil combined religious and social concerns.
