As power production is decreasing and consumption is sky-rocketing, we need to focus on alternative energy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating various projects in Perinjanam panchayat, including its prestigious solar power project, Perinjanorjam, on Monday.

Perinjanam became a role model for the entire country by installing 2,000 solar panels on the roofs of 246 houses in the grama panchayat.

Perinjanorjam is contributing 2,500 units of power to the KSEB grid a day.

“We are buying 70% of the power for our domestic consumers from outside the State. The rest of the power production is mainly from hydro-electric projects. The solar power production is an effective way to end dependence on traditional power sources,” the Chief Minister said.

“The Perinjanam panchayat is a role model for the country in solar power generation. The authorities should be careful not only in implementing the projects but also in maintaining them,” he reminded. The public also has a responsibility to check whether the projects were improving.

‘Model for others’

Perinjanam was a model for other local body institutions, he said.

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar inaugurated a biopharmacy and Benny Behanan, MP, new flats in the panchayat. E.T. Taison, MLA, presided over the function. The other remarkable projects, which were inaugurated by the Chief Minister included a LED streetlight project, 9.5-kilowatt solar project on the top of Government UP School building, and ‘Gobardhan,’ a solid waste management project.

The biogas produced from the Gobardhan project will be used for providing biogas connection for 20 poor families in Mandaram Colony.

Other schemes

Expansion of Clean Perinjanam project, a plastic waste management project; a bio-pharmacy (biopesticides and biofertilisers); Kith and Kin Kudumbashree brand; Kudumbashree Common facility centre; Oruma SC Colony development project and Model Anganwadi building were the other projects.
