Even floods can’t stop a wedding. The relief camp at Believers School here turned a wedding hall on Monday when Ammu, a resident of Champakulam accommodated at the camp following floods, tied the knot with Ratheesh of Alakode in Kannur, in the presence of relatives, camp residents, and officials.
The wedding was actually scheduled for August 21. However, Ammu’s home was submerged following the floods and the entire family moved to the relief camp.
“After the initial postponement, both the families decided to conduct the marriage on August 27. But, soon we realised that even the new date was not realistic as the place continued to remain inundated. Ammu’s father Biju raised the issue with camp authorities on Sunday and they provided all help,” said a relative of Ammu.
The wedding was organised with the help of the Aryad panchayat authorities who gifted two sovereigns of gold to the couple. A.M. Ariff, MLA, presented a wedding saree to Ammu. After the wedding, authorities served meals to 800 residents and relatives of both Ammu and Ratheesh. The couple left for Kannur in the evening.
Aryad panchayat president Kavitha Haridas, vice-president Bipin Raj B., secretary S. Veena, social activist Sheela Kurian, religious leaders, police officers, people’s representatives, and others attended the function.
