Fishermen to march to Coast Guard office

The district unit of the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation said here on Thursday that fishermen in Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts would take out a march to the Coast Guard office in Kochi on Friday demanding that the captain of the Italian ship be booked for homicide for shooting dead two fishermen off the Ambalappuzha coast on Wednesday.

In a statement here, Federation district president K. Babu Ottamassery and district secretary Jackson Pollayil said the families of the fishermen should be given due compensation.

“It is a serious breach of security that the ship authorities fired at the fishermen in the boat without any provocation or any history of sea pirate attack or terror attack at 14 nautical miles off Kerala coast. The ship could have raised the security alarm and reported the matter to Coast Guard or Indian Navy if there was any provocation from the boat's crew. It can only be seen as a deliberate act on the part of the ship's authorities, they said.
