Fishermen protest in the district

There were widespread protests by fishermen in the district as two instances of threat to their lives and property were reported off Kerala coast within a short span of time.

Protesting fishermen under the banner of Matsya Thozhilali Federation (AITUC) which was observing a State-wide protest took out a march to the district collectorate on Friday morning. Former MP, T.J. Anjalose inaugurated the march. He demanded Centre and State Government should come forward to ensure the safety of fishermen.

Later, Mr. Anjalose said in a statement that the fishermen were seething with anger as this was the 15-th instance of collision mid-sea in three months. The bodies of fishermen, who were killed on Thursday accident and the earlier accident, were shifted to the shore in fishing boats. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Enforcement remained mute spectators in the two cases, he alleged.

Matsya Thozhilali Federation (CITU) have also observed Friday as protest day. Kerala Swanthantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation had observed Friday as ‘black day’ in the district.
