Flood rescue operations have drawn to a close in Chengannur, Saji Cherian, MLA, has said.
He was talking to reporters at Chengannur on Tuesday. “The water has begun to recede. We have completed the first phase of the rescue operations. However, the search will continue for those stranded in remote areas,” Mr. Cherian said.
He said all help would be provided to the people in relief camps and other affected people. “At least 30,000 houses had been submerged in the floodwaters. A big amount of money and workforce are needed to clean the houses,” he said.
The district police have strengthened security in all relief camps in the district. District Police Chief (DCP) S. Surendran said five companies of the police had been additionally deployed for security in the camps. “One company consists of women civil police officers. We have also imposed certain restrictions in camps to ensure safety of the people staying there,” he said.
Meanwhile, the flood situation remains grim in Kuttanad. Water level remained high as the floodwaters from the Vembanad lake have not drained out to the sea.
