A 55-year-old marginal farmer was found dead hanging at a coffee plantation near his house at Anappara, near Kattikulam, in Wayanad on Thursday.

The Thirunelly police identified the deceased as Krishnakumar of Puliyangandy.

Bank loans

Krishnakumar had borrowed ₹3.5 lakh from the Thrissilery Service Cooperative Bank and ₹2 lakh from his friends for cultivation but could not repay it due to crop loss, his relatives said.

It was suspected that the huge debt prompted him to take the extreme step, they said.

Krishnakumar is survived by wife Ratnamma and four children.

Govt. blamed

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Mullappally Ramachandran blamed the State government for the suicide of the farmer.
