Vijayan, 56, of Oonnukallingal at Venguru, near Sulthan Bathery grama panchayat, in the district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) at a private medical college hospital here on Monday morning.

Vijayan, a marginal farmer, was admitted to the Sulthan Bathery taluk hospital on April 18 with complicated symptoms of KFD. The next day he was referred to a private medical college. He was shifted to the intensive care unit on April 20 after he was confirmed KFD positive. He had reportedly developed renal complications, P.V. Sasidharan, District Medical Officer in-charge, told The Hindu . Vijayan’s relatives said the carcass of a monkey was found on their plantation nearly a month ago, and Vijayan buried the carcass on the land. Later, he was vaccinated against the disease. However, Dr. Sasidharan said the vaccination would take a minimum of six months to take effect.
