In a humane gesture, a family from Uduma here has offered to hand over an acre of land to the district administration for flood-relief activities.

P. Raveendran of Udayamangalam in Uduma and his son P.R. Akhil met District Collector D. Sajithbabu here on Thursday and handed over the consent letter to donate land. As per the prevailing market rate, the land is estimated to cost ₹76 lakh.

‘Laudable effort’

The family’s gesture to donate the land was laudable, Dr. Sajithbabu said.

The land in prime location has 50 coconut palms and irrigation facilities.

The district administration will now scrutinise the documents and it could take up to six months to vest the land with the government, which will be taking the final call on how the land should be utilised.

Mr. Raveendran, who runs a laterite quarry near Uduma, told The Hindu that his family was shocked to see the calamity and the misery faced by the people. Mr. Akhil is running a small textile shop at Palakkunnu, near Uduma. Raveendran has another son who is doing MBA abroad and a daughter, an engineering graduate.
