More than 5,000 kg of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in explosives, was seized at Velanthavalam on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in a raid by the Excise Department.

Officials said they seized the chemical in gunny bags from a goods carrier while carrying out routine inspection on Monday night. The chemical was hid inside bio-fertilizers.

Officials also seized the vehicle used for transporting the chemical. The driver escaped from the scene while his assistant Raja, 35, from Uliyoor in Tamil Nadu was arrested.
