It seems the Excise Department in Kollam is not just keen on nabbing the offenders, but also rehabilitating them.

Recently, they admitted an 18-year-old who was arrested for possessing ganja at the newly opened de-addiction centre under Vimukthi Mission at the Ramarao Memorial Taluk Hospital, Nedungolam.

“We spoke to his parents and convinced them to take him there after securing the bail. Our department, with the help of parents and social workers, has launched an initiative to identify persons who are into substance abuse and guide them to this facility,” an official said.

Misconceptions

The recently opened de-addiction centre at Nedungolam offers consultation, counselling sessions, and in-patient treatment by a medical team that includes a psychiatrist, MBBS doctor, clinical psychologist, and psychiatric social worker. “There are many persons who think ganja is a herbal medicine and there is no harm in using it. Lack of parental monitoring and association with addicts are other factors that affect youngsters,” said Anil Kumar, psychologist of the centre.

Kollam Assistant Excise Commissioner P.K. Sanu and Paravur municipality PWD standing committee chairperson Ambika recently visited the centre to evaluate the facilities. “The centre has in-patient facilities for ten persons and those who want medical help or treatment can contact 9496002862,” said Mr. Sanu. The department has also intensified surveillance near education institutions to prevent the sale of banned tobacco products.
