Landless estate workers who had been on a month-long strike in Devikulam taluk demanding land called off their agitation on Wednesday.

The CPI(M), which was spearheading the agitation at Chinnakanal, decided to end the strike after discussions with the District Collector on Wednesday, with the workers agreeing to leave the agitation venue in a day.

They had, under the banner of the Centre of India Trade Unions, organised a march to a revenue land at Chinnakanal and erected sheds there.

The CPI(M) began the agitation a month ago after some estate workers, under an agitation council, erected sheds on a revenue land allegedly encroached on by a group at Suryanelli.

District Collector H.Dinesan on Wednesday told The Hindu that the agitators would leave the encroached land and remove the sheds by Thursday.
