Minister for Higher Education K.T. Jaleel said here on Monday that there should be equivalency for similar programmes offered by different universities functioning under one Chancellor.

Delivering the fourth convocation address at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University at Tirur on Monday, Mr. Jaleel said the practice of universities in the State demanding separate equivalency certificates for various programmes offered by sister universities was causing hardship to students.

Demanding equivalency certificates from those having completed programmes from Central and other recognised universities for higher studies or jobs in the State is objectionable, the Minister said. “We should do away with such technicalities,” he said.

Mr. Jaleel said the Malayalam University Syndicate would be constituted soon. He said futuristic courses would be introduced in

universities in the State in order to prevent Malayali students from seeking admission to such programmes in other States. Such programmes will be in the self-financing mode, he said.

The Minister said the multi-campus system followed by certain universities was causing extra expenditure for the State. “Some

teachers with vested interests are behind this practice,” he said.

Efforts would be made to end the multi-campus system, he said.

Malayalam University awarded postgraduate degrees to 130 students in 10 disciplines. Breaking from a tradition started by the university’s founding Vice Chancellor K. Jayakumar, no Kerala dhoti or shawl was used for the convocation. Instead, the conventional academic cloak and mortarboard cap were introduced.

C. Mammootty, MLA, offered felicitation. Vice Chancellor Anil Vallathol presented a report. Registrar T. Anita Kumari and

Examination Controller E. Radhakrishnan spoke.
