Enact laws to protect Sabarimala custom: ABASS

The Union and the State governments should enact laws to protect the custom and practices of Sabarimala, Akhila Bharatha Ayyappa Seva Sanghom (ABASS) vice president D. Vijayakumar has said.

In a statement on Saturday, Mr. Vijayakumar said the Supreme Court ruling would have far-reaching consequences. The State and society are bound to accept the judgment even though it hurts the sentiments of Ayyappa devotes.

He said the government and the Travancore Devaswom Board would have to face many challenges in implementing the court order, especially since Sabarimala lacked basic amenities for women. Permitting women in all age groups to Sabarimala, without ensuring basic arrangements, would only create more problems at the hill shrine, Mr. Vijayakumar said.
