A 31-year-old mahout was trampled to death by a tusker at the Kottarkavu temple, near Mavelikara, on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Reni of Paravur. The police said Evoor Kannan, a 26-year-old elephant belonging to the Evoor Sreekrishna Swami temple, attacked its mahout while being given a bath at the temple compound around 5.15 p.m. The mahout’s body was shifted to the morgue of the District Hospital, Mavelikara.

On March 31, 2013, the elephant had killed its mahout during a festival at the Ambalappuzha Sri Krishnaswamy temple. Following the incident, it had not been paraded in major festivals until last year.
