Elders seek probe

Several members of the Rajya Sabha on Friday expressed concern and sought an inquiry into the death of a young woman athlete and the alleged suicide attempt by three others near Alappuzha in Kerala on Wednesday.

Pramod Tiwari (Congress), who had given notice of suspension of business, raised the issue during zero hour. The suicide points to corruption and nepotism in the Sports Ministry, he said.

Congress member Rajeev Shukla demanded the removal of the director-general over the incident.

However, rejecting Mr. Tiwari’s notice under Rule 267, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien said he personally felt it was an important issue on which the government should come back with a statement. m to make a statement.
