Eco lessons from a yellow basket

NSS volunteers segregate plastic waste in classrooms

The NSS volunteers of the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School, Irinjalakuda, have been practising lessons in environmental conservation.

As part of a mission to protect the environment from harmful plastic waste, they are segregating the plastics at the source itself.

All classrooms have been given a yellow basket to collect plastic waste.

The mission is not confined to classrooms. They have been asked to collect plastic waste from their respective homes too. This not only prevents littering but also provides a relief for the houses from plastic waste.

Recycling

The collected plastics are given to the municipality for recycling. They are also making craft items with the collected plastic.

The mission has changed the attitude of not only the NSS volunteers but the entire student community in the school. “Now we cannot think about burning even a single plastic scarp,” said NSS volunteer Amritha Nayana.

School Principal Pyarija M. and NSS programme officer Manju T.N. are providing guidelines for the students in their mission.
