The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not opposed to the sale or consumption of beef in Kerala, according to Shobha Surendran, BJP national executive member.
“But my party is against organising beef festivals in educational institutions because students go there to study and not to eat beef, ’’ according to her.
She alleged that beef festivals were being organised with a hidden political agenda. “That is what we are opposing in Kerala,” she said.
She told the media here on Wednesday that her party will not raise beef as an issue in the local bodies elections.
She said that neither the BJP nor any Sangh Parivar organisations had organised any protest against beef in the State or marched to slaughter houses. She denied reports in a section of the media quoting her as saying that the BJP did not want votes of beef eaters.
Incidentally, the social media has been agog after someone posted a picture of BJP leader K. Surendran at a village restaurant allegedly gorging on beef. Mr. Surendran, however, had denied it, saying it was actually a curry made of onions.
