Stray cases of vegetation getting dried up have been reported at a few places along the Alappuzha coast. The phenomenon could be the result of hot winds or salt water intrusion through high waves. “It is a strange phenomenon, unheard of in the past,” K. Mohan Kumar, Professor, Atmospheric Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology, told The Hindu . “It will require studies to find out the cause of the drying up of foliage on the coast during the monsoon,” he said. The district administration said stray cases of green leaves getting burnt had occurred. There was no scientific confirmation yet. The monsoon is in a low phase. Hot winds, reported from some places earlier, had not been recorded in the district, sources said.
