An excise officer was injured when an accused in a drug case fired at him with a gun at Wandoor in the district in the early hours of Tuesday.
Excise range inspector Manoj Kumar was hit on his leg when George Kutty, 36, fired four rounds at the excise team that tried to nab him. The team chased and overpowered him when he tried to escape. The incident took place around 12.30 a.m. when the team cornered Geroge Kutty at his wife’s house at Kuttippara, Wandoor. He had escaped from excise custody while being taken to Bangaluru in connection with a case involving smuggling of 20 kg of hashish oil registered in Thiruvananthapuram.
The excise team led by inspectors Manoj Kumar and Saji Mon reached Wandoor around midnight on the basis of a tip-off that he was hiding in his wife’s house. They circled the house and tried to arrest him when George Kutty fired at them through the back door of the house. Excise officers said he fired four rounds in the dark. Manoj Kumar was wounded below the knee. He was admitted to a hospital. The gun George Kutty used was recovered from him.
