Drinking water distribution has gone completely haywire in six districts and remains partially affected in seven districts.

Sources in the Kerala Water Authority that maintains the water supply chain across the State told The Hindu on Thursday that the government should expedite steps to bring in drinking water from neighbouring States with the help of the army to meet the demand in the flood affected districts.

Supply remains completely disrupted in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam,Wayanad, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts and partially affected in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Alappuzha and Kannur. Kasargod is the only district where the supply has not been affected. Resuming normalcy in distribution is a time-consuming affair. Treatment plants in the flood-affected regions remain submerged and the government should seriously explore the possibility of carting water from neighbouring States to meet the exigency. Transporting water in tanker lorries also is not feasible at present, sources said.

KWA has constituted special teams for monitoring the situation and is attempting all options to resume supply, sources said.
