Heavy rainfall for consecutive days has inundated all low lying areas in the State. Two persons were killed in Kannur on Monday in separate incidents of building collapse.
At Panur, a compound wall collapsed on a 15-year-old boy named Ranjith killing him and at Valiyannur, a 68-year-old man, Choolikkandi Gangadharan, lost his life when a building collapsed on a bus shelter. Both places are in Kannur district, which has been receiving the heaviest downpour these days.
Two members of a family were killed in a landslip after a mass of earth caved into a house near Delampady, around 42 km from Kasaragod here on Monday evening, under the impact of incessant rain lashing north Kerala. The bodies of 12 year-old boy Mubin and his aunt Asma (38), who went missing as the mud caved atop the kitchen around 7.30 pm, were extricated from the heap of mud around 10 p.m. following frantic search to rescue the trapped family members, A. Damodaran, Sub-Inspector, Adur Police station told The Hindu . The mud caved in atop the kitchen of the house at Moranganam close to Pallamgode locality, a senior police official on the spot, said.
All rivers are in spate and the Kuttanad region in Alappuzha district in facing a flood situation. Alappuzha District Collector on Monday announced holiday on Tuesday for all schools in the district.
The smaller of the hydel and irrigation dams in the State are fast filling up and their shutters may have to be opened soon to release the flood flow if rain is to continue in such intensity.
More rain forecast
The water level in the backwaters of the region is fast approaching the danger mark, threatening to break the bunds protecting the paddy fields. India Meteorology Department (IMD), in its bulletin on Monday, said heavy rainfall would continue in Kerala for at least two more days.
Not much change is expected in the subsequent two days also. A deep offshore trough has been running along the entire stretch of the west coast for nearly a week now and there was also a vortex formation off the Konkan coast embedded in the system. This meteorological condition can bring heavy rainfall all along the west coast, including Kerala.
