Decomposed body of Kerala trader found in Arunachal jungle

K.C. Chako, a trader at Itanagar, was abducted on August 27 by gunmen

The decomposed body of a prominent trader of Arunachal Pradesh K.C. Chako was recovered on Friday from a jungle in Cheputa village, about 30 km off the State capital Itanagar.

Mr. Chako was abducted by unidentified gunmen from his rented house at Naharlagun, near Itanagar, around 8.30 p.m. on August 27 night

Hailing from Kottayam district in Kerala, Mr. Chako was running a bakery chain at Itanagar for more than three decades.

Police sources said a platoon of 3rd India Reserve Battalion, led by platoon commander D. Natung, spotted the body of the trader, with his hands and legs tied, inside the jungle around 1.30 p.m.

Confirming the news, Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Tanga Byaling told The Hindu that the abducted trader’s body with bullet injuries was recovered on Friday afternoon, and later brought to Naharlagun. He said it could not be immediately known when the abductors had killed Mr. Chako. More details would be known after the post-mortem examination.

The Home Minister said the body would be taken to Kerala on Saturday.

Mr. Byaling said Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had spoken to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki following the receipt of the news. Mr. Tuki had assured Mr. Chandy that there would be zero tolerance towards the culprits involved, and they would soon be brought to book.

Preliminary investigation indicated the involvement of criminals from Assam, Mr. Byaling said.

Asked if there was a demand for ransom, Mr. Byaling said the government had not been informed of any such demand. Only a through investigations would bring to light the motive behind the abduction and murder of Mr. Chako, he said.
