The meeting of the Rubber Board held here on Thursday has deferred the decision on the move to rename the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII). The issue was brought up in the Board as a special agenda.

However, there was stiff opposition from most of the members who believed that such an action would be dubbed as an effort to introduce politics in the affairs of the institution which had so far maintained high standards of professionalism, It was also pointed out that the RRII was only a department of the Rubber Board and as such it was improper to move ahead with the proposal.

In the absence of a consensus, it was decided to defer the agenda, sources said. The issue relates to the move on the part of a section of the members of the RRII as Prof K M Chandy Research Institute of Rubber, India in memory of the veteran Congress leader and former chairman of the Board.
