DCC demands probe into death of CPI(M) functionary

Involvement of local party leaders alleged

: District Congress Committee (DCC) president K. Surendran has called for a comprehensive probe into the death of Communist Party of India (Marxist) local functionary and director of a local service co-operative bank C.H. Rajendran.

Mr. Surendran said at a press conference here on Thursday that though the CPI(M) circles here were presenting the death as a case of suicide, mysterious circumstances of the death had raised suspicion among local party workers.

He said the death of Rajendran, director of the co-operative bank, had triggered suspicion that his life could have been taken away by those who feared exposure of corrupt practices at the bank and of involvement of local party workers and their family members in them, he added.

The DCC president alleged that Rajendran is suspected to have been made a scapegoat in the incident of the loss of gold ornaments in the locker of the bank controlled by the CPI(M). Observing that it was impossible for one of the directors of the bank to take away the ornaments kept in the locker, he said that employees in the bank who had opened the locker had greater responsibility for the loss of ornaments. The CPI(M) leadership had allegedly targeted Rajendran to save a local leader of the party and a former secretary of the bank, he alleged.

The DCC president said that Rajendran had reportedly told the police that the gold ornaments weighing 9.5 sovereigns had been seen during the stock-taking and that he was not aware of what had happened subsequently. The CCTV footage of the bank was suspected to be tampered with, he said.
